Puerh Education Tasting Set - Shou / Ripe - Leaf Grade
This is a very unique educational experience. Understanding leaf grade is critical knowledge when creating blends. Master tea blenders in Yunnan, China understand these principles. The blends we drink as a result of their wisdom are greatly appreciated. Outside of Yunnan the opportunity to experience a hands on education like this is largely unheard of.
We sourced these cakes from the China Puerh Research Institute. The CPTR is a government subsidized research organization whose goal is to spread puerh knowledge. Each cake consists of a different grade of leaf based on plucking standard:
- Grade 1: 1 bud, 1 leaf
- Grade 2: 1 bud, 2 leaves
- Grade 3: 1 bud, 3 leaves
- Grade 4: 1 bud, 4 leaves
These are hand picked and left on the stem.
This educational tasting set contains 10g samples of each of the 4 grades of leaf. Take the 4 grades and brew them side by side. After you’ve experimented with the uniqueness of each grade try mixing it up. Brew some from each grade and then mix that brew with the others. Try say 75% of Grade 4 with 25% of grade 1. Learn to create custom blends. This is what the tea masters in Yunnan have done for a millenia. Create your own recipes. Take notes. Learn and enjoy the amazing world of puerh!
Measure out 5-7 grams of leaves and brew with 6-8 ounces of water at or near boiling. Wash twice for 3s each, then start with a quick steep of 6-8s. Then adjust steeping times as needed.
